Week 4

Great Things From the Week

Back To School Night- Great Job everyone. It seems to have went really well.

ALL the textbooks are distributed!!! (We are hearing of some errors, please just let us know so we can follow up - Roe, myself and Shelley)

Thank you for welcoming new students into your class. Lots of movement expected this week as classes are balanced and program selection choice windows close. I appreciate your patience and please reach out and let us know if we can help you.

Thank you Tali, Micheal and Veronica for teaching our Social Injustice lessons- These are temporarily paused until I can get communication out to you and the community about  these lessons and why we are teaching them.

                                       AVID

Advancement Via Individual Determination

Our AVID commitment is to hold all students to high expectations, Students need to be explicitly taught how to use organizational tools. They need to be monitored and held accountable. Take the time to teach your expectations and check in to make sure they are adhering to those expectations.

AVID Material

TK-2 - Binders are in the mail. Should be getting to students any day. Please let us know if you have new students so we can send out.

3-6 AVID materials are ordered and as soon as we get them, we will set up a pick up day, we will ask for your support to get students notified.

WICOR

W- Writing to Learn (we spent a lot of time on writing last year, with a heavy focus on teaching students how to read a text, pull out important information, take notes and use evidence to answer Essential Questions) Students can not write with out experience (in person, virtual or otherwise). They can not write about something they have not had a number of experiences with. We can not skip this step, they need visuals, multi-media, sensory, compare and contrast and other opportunities before they can write to a topic or subject.

I- Level of questioning -Click here for more information

C- Collaboration - We explicitly taught students how to collaborate, we used the 4 L's (or a variation). we provided sentence frames, assigned roles for each collaboration partner and followed up with feedback and checking for understanding.

O- Organization - It is so important to keep students organized, with hand held items, digital items, etc. We will all use the AVID binder and require students to be AVID ready (set a 30 second timer and they should be able to find what you are asking them to find- if not they are not AVID ready and they need support to become AVID ready. Peer support, teacher support, parent support, etc. )

R- Reading to Learn - Once students acquire the skills to decode, they shift to reading for a purpose, to learn. It is important that we are not just assigning reading to read, but rather to make connections, and expand a students learning process. Close Reading Skills are a great skill w need to teach all students. Use your protocols to walk them through how to identify important information and answer the Essential Questions.

EQUITY

Our equity goal for the year - Provide access to a quality education for all

Please make sure you keep track of students not participating in class. We have been pulling attendance data and will continue to do so. Please  begin to note attendance/barrier issues that prevent a student from participating HERE

We will continue to reach out and set up communication teams to reach every family every month. (This will be in addition to the work you are already doing) This will be rolled out in September.

Ongoing communication plan for all - All to be scheduled and we will push out dates.

1.Monthly coffee with the principal via zoom
2. Monthly newsletter mailer (email, social media link and physical monthly mailer) - Lori will take the lead on this more information to come.
3. Monthly check in during phase 1 - every family will have an check in call from the office team once a month to provide support or help with what ever they need. (this may increase for some families based of need)
4.Parent survey (at least once bi-monthly)

NUTS and BOLTS

Don't forget to check the bit.ly/HarrisonHub for all your Harrison needs

New attendance protocols. Please remember to do attendance daily, due by 11:59pm the follow day. Weekly Engagement Records need to be completed, signed and submitted to Amy the following Monday.

Please ask your students to get their textbooks. If they have not done that they need to go to their home school and pick them up.

TK-2 Please check with your students and families and let them know that the reading books are not consumable. Only ELA practice book and math, the reading books are soft but need to be returned.

BOY assessments. Currently they are delayed and being reviewed. We know we need screeners for kids so feel free to do the screeners you would like to use and don't worry about required ones at this time. It looks like they are all being pushed to at least the second week of September.

Please remember to check in on each other. It is a lonely job and it can feel very isolating. Please be safe physically, mentally and emotionally.

Tutoring is coming soon for students. Information to come. (Looks like late September or October)

Teachers, don't forget to reach out to your assigned superior/aide - they are here to help.
